Safety Alert from the HSE – Hydraulics

The HSE have released a Safety Alert following the death of a maintenance fitter.

Sadly, the fitter died from a hydraulic injection injury sustained whilst tensioning the track of a piling rig. The grease nipple became detached from the track mechanism permitting the release of grease under high pressure

The dangers of hydraulic injection injuries and the circumstances in which they can happen are detailed on the HSE website.

What you need to Do

Ensure machinery assessments have been carried out on your equipment

Ensure any parts which may fail due to hydraulic pressure are inspected regularly

Ensure defects are reported and equipment is quarantined (and labelled as quarantined) until it is repaired and safe to use.
